Deetz says that corporations "control and colonize" modern life in waysThis statement really makes a lot of sense to me, especially considering corporations such as AT&T, Time Warner, Disney and Microsoft. These handful of companies own a large percentage of wealth and resources, having the ability to influence masses. Who hasn't heard of these corporations? Disney for instance, has controlled and colonized millions of children who grow up influencd by their fairy tale stories, characters, and even the by-products of young Disney stars. Notice how much control Disney exerts on their young stars and tight of a rein they keep? Do the stories of Vanessa Hudgens, Miley Cyrus or any of those teeny boppers ring a bell anyone? Disney is known to run a tight ship (I have a friend who's company paired up with them to promote "Enchanted" and she informed me of all the restrictions and regulations they had)... therefore with their strategies they are able to rake in the millions.
that no government or public body since the feudal era ever thought possible.

The corporate world is a crazy one indeed. It's interesting how these world renown corporations have embedded themselves in our lives and it seems like they will never let go. Or rather, we will never let them go. It's amazing how they have worked their way into the hearts and minds of all of us and we just let it happen. It's like we're being brainwashed willingly, and their making a ton of money off of it. Their strategies to taking over the world are key. I think Disney is a great example. Their strategy is to start getting people hooked when they are young. Once you're hooked, there is really no chance of going back.
Thank you for the valuable comments, which I agree with.
Yes, corporations have colonized our way of living; corporations do "control and colonize" our lives.
Living and working in the Bay Area slants our view of reality. We live in an oasis of diversity, engulfed with progressive companies. This gives us a false sense of reality, which is mostly not present elsewhere.
I have personally worked in Silicon Valley for many years as employee and employer where many of this chapter’s progressive notions are normal. I am not unique; many of the concepts introduced by Deetz are actually practiced by many companies in the Bay Area. In my first job in this area many years ago, my manager and I did not get along. The company invested the effort in working issues out; my manager underwent special training; he was eventually asked to step aside. Looking back at it, he was definitely not a terrible manager, yet the issue was taken seriously by all involved, including that manager.
Here is another example from that company: one morning, employees arrived to work only to find an email from one of the company’s engineers; the email was harshly critical of senior management, including the CEO; the engineer demanded certain changes in strategy and in communication. He was not fired; instead, a team was formed to investigate and implement his suggestions. The company was not only good to its employees, but also a good citizen in the community, contributing to charities, encouraging employees to be civically active, sponsoring in-house speeches on humanitarian causes, etc. Diversity was the norm at a time when Silicon Valley did not have as many ethnicities as it does today. This was a profitable public company with a few thousand employees.
However, I think these concepts work only when applied with honest intention. When applied as lip service, they fail as stakeholders see through them.
It is very true that corporations have found ways to control and colonize society's daily way of life. I liked how you used Disney as an example of how the company has controlled the views of children for many years. But your analysis of Disney shouldn't stop there. Disney is such a large corporation that makes more than movies. Consider all of the tv shows, even the music that the company produces. Disney is a good example of how a company can control society with different media that we used on a daily basis.
